ICC Champions Trophy – History

The International Cricket Council (ICC) hosts the ICC Champions Trophy, the second-most important ODI cricket tournament after the Cricket World Cup. In 2002, the name was changed to the Champions Trophy. The number of teams competing has changed over time. Initially, all of the ICC's full members participated, and associate members participated from 2000 to 2004. Since 2009, the competition has only included the eight teams with the highest ODI rankings six months before the event.

The ICC aims for the 2013 Champions Trophy to be the final, with a new ICC World Test taking its place in the cricketing calendar. 

Champion Trophy News – Game Format 

There are many ways in which the Champions Trophy differs from the World Cup. While the World Cup is staged every four years, the Champions Trophy is only played every two years. 

The Champion Trophy contests last about two weeks, whereas the World Cup games might go on for more than a month. Twelve teams participated in a round-robin tournament in four pools of three in 2002 and 2004, with the winning team advancing to the semi-finals. A team would need to win the event with just four games (two in the pool, a semi-final, and the championship). Eight teams competed in two pools of four in 2006, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the semi-finals.

However, the team would be eliminated from all tournaments after losing a single match. 

The Champions Trophy formats differed from those used in the KnockOut competitions. There were no pools in the competition, and the loser of each game was eliminated. In 1998, only 8 games were played; in 2000, 10 games were played.

After the 2017 edition, the competition was canceled to keep just one worldwide tournament for each of the three formats. However, the ICC declared the upcoming ICC champions trophy in 2021 that the tournament would return between 2025 and 2029, according to the champions trophy news.

1998 – South Africa 

Nine teams competed in Bangladesh for the first time in the Champions Trophy's history. South Africa and the West Indies played in the championship game at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. West Indies scored 245 runs thanks to Philo Wallace's century. The Proteas squad responded by winning by four wickets in 47 overs.

2000 – New Zealand 

The final between India and New Zealand was contested in Nairobi during the second edition, which was held in Kenya and featured 11 teams. India scored 264/6 as a team, with skipper Sourav Ganguly scoring 117 runs. India easily won the chase after taking five wickets for 132 runs off the New Zealand team. However, Chris Cairns, who batted at number 5, struck an extraordinary century to help his team win the match.

2002 – India & Sri Lanka 

Twelve teams competed in the third edition, which England hosted. The final between Sri Lanka and India took place in Colombo. With the support of the fifty-plus scores from Mahela Jayawardene and Russell Arnold, Sri Lanka scored 222/7 in 50 overs. Rain prevented the Indians from finishing their innings, and even on the reserve day, only 8.4 overs could be bowled. India and Sri Lanka were ultimately announced as equal champions.

2004 – West Indies 

Twelve teams were competing in this event, which was hosted in England, and the Oval in London hosted the championship game between England and the West Indies. When England was selected to bat first, only Marcus Trescothick's century stood out as a standout performer. In 49.4 overs, they scored 217 runs for their total, with Wavell Hinds taking three wickets. West Indies eventually defeated their opponents by two wickets with seven balls remaining in the chase.

2006 – Australia 

Australia and the West Indies competed in the final at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium in this, the first edition to be contested in India. When West Indies batted first, they were dismissed for just 138 runs in 30.4 overs. Australia's aim was 116 runs in 35 overs with rain delays. They won by eight wickets in 28.1 overs, thanks to performances from Shane Watson and Damien Martyn.

2009 –Australia 

Only eight teams competed in this edition, contested in South Africa, and the Kiwi squad could score 200/9 in 50 overs during the final match versus Australia. With a six-wicket triumph, the Australian team captured its second straight championship.

2013 – India

India won the match by five runs after the home team continued to lose wickets at regular intervals during the pursuit.

2017 – Pakistan 

With India and Pakistan facing off in the final, this edition was again hosted in England. Pakistan was allowed to bat first and amassed a big score of 338/4 in 50 overs. Fakhar Zaman produced an outstanding century for them, and Mohammad Hafeez added a quick-fire knock. In response, the Indian players batting order collapsed and was dismissed for just 158 runs, which resulted in a 180-run loss.

When will the ICC Champions Trophy return? – Next Champions Trophy News 

The 50-over competition will feature 14 teams starting with the 2027 edition, while the T20 World Cup will be staged every two years throughout the following eight-year Futures Tours & Programme (FTP) cycle.

In addition to the two Champions Trophy tournaments, the World Test Championship will have four editions in the upcoming matches, according to an earlier report from PTI.

The men's Cricket World Cup and men's T20 World Cup will increase, and a men's next ICC Champions Trophy will be reintroduced, according to a statement from the international governing body following the board meeting.

The current 50-over format is a 10-team competition, while the current T20 World Cup will have 16 teams.

The statement continued, "The ICC Women's event schedule has already been confirmed with the expansion of both the Cricket World Cup and T20 World Cup forming part of the ICC's long-term commitment to growing the women's game. An eight-team Champions Trophy will be hosted in 2025 and 2029. ICC World Test Championship Finals will be hosted in 2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031.

Format of ICC ODI World Cup in 2027 & 2031

Two groups of seven will make up the men's World Cup format, with the top three players from each group moving on to a Super Six stage, followed by the semi-finals and final. The 2003 edition followed the same format as this one.

Joint Winners in Champions Trophy 2002 – India & Sri Lanka 

With 12 nations now participating in the ICC Champion Trophy, and the competition taking place in Sri Lanka, the 2002 edition grew bigger & better. In that competition, India's Virender Sehwag amassed runs like nobody's business, finishing with 271 runs to lead all scorers. With 10 victories under his belt, Muttiah Muralitharan of the host nation ended up taking the most wickets in that tournament.

India & Sri Lanka have managed to step into the final, with Sri Lanka setting a target of 222 runs and relying on half-centuries from Mahela Jayawardene and Russell Arnold.
