West Indies Cricket Team - History

The first unified West Indies team was established and toured Canada and the US in the 1880s. The first representative teams were chosen to take on visiting English teams in the 1890s.

The West Indies Cricket Board joined the Imperial Cricket Council, the world's governing body of cricket, in 1926 and participated in their first Test match in 1928. Despite having exceptional players in their early years as a Test country, until the 1960s, their success was intermittent.

The WICB has been a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1926 and is also a member of the Americas Cricket Association. It operates the West Indies cricket team and West Indies A cricket team, organizing Test tours and one-day internationals with other teams.

The West Indies had a team towards the end of the 1970s that was regarded as the unofficial world champions, composed of talented batsmen, standout fielders, and a formidable speed bowling attack. West Indies' squad from the 1970s and 1980s is now recognized with Don Bradman's Australian "Invincibles" as one of the greatest in test cricket history.

The great squad of the 1980s not only inflicted two 5-0 "blackwashes" over the old foe of England but also established a then-record streak of 11 straight Test victories in 1984, part of a still-standing record of 27 tests without a loss (the other tests were draws).

While they haven't reached such heights on a sustained basis since the WINDIES remain one of the most successful cricket teams in history, the WINDIES continue to outperform the rest of the globe on a pound-for-pound basis, despite having access to a population that is less than 0.1% of the world's largest cricketing nation (India - population 1.34 billion).

In 2016, the WINDIES were the only team to simultaneously win three ICC World Cup events: the Men's ICC World T20, the Women's ICC World T20, and the ICC Under-19 World Cup.
