IPL Latest News & Match Updates

Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional cricket event conducted in Twenty20 (T20) format and since its inception in 2008, it has gained a rich popularity among the cricket enthusiasts.

IPL league is based on a round-robin group and knockout format that has the teams in major Indian cities to come up together on the cricket ground.

The brainchild of the cricket league is the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that has transformed the cricket event into one of the most lucrative cricket events.

With IPL new matches in the initial stages, the tournaments were played in the home and away grounds between all the teams.

However, the matches were played with a planned expansion to 10 clubs (with a division of two groups each with five) in 2011, that changed the format so that the matches between the some teams would be confined to a single encounter.

Setup of the Teams to Play the IPL League

In the contest, the top four teams indulge in three play-off matches and one losing team being allowed to play a second time to step into the finals.

During the play-offs, the tournament involved four teams finishing at the top of the tables in a series of knockout matches that allowed one team (one that lost its first-round match) to try a second chance to reach the final match.

With the advent of IPL leagues, the tournament included Bollywood megastars, and media moguls to retain the best players to players in the auction. The involvement of the Bollywood and business giants made it a cash-rich league, making the game more entertaining and intriguing.

Best starting lineups for each team's first game

Each team will be working to make the most of the resources at their disposal because there will be a few notable absences before the 2022 IPL season begins.

  • Delhi Capitals - DC

Prithvi Shaw

Tim Seifert

KS Bharat

Rishabh Pant (c/wk)

Rovman Powell

Sarfaraz Khan

Shardul Thakur

Axar Patel

Kuldeep Yadav

Mustafizur Rahman

Lungi Ngidi

The Delhi Capitals' loss of Mitchell Marsh and David Warner, two international stars, will be felt greatly. Anrich Nortje is expected to miss the first few games as he has not yet fully regained his match fitness. Because the team's current top six bowlers are uninspired, the absence of a sixth bowling option could be detrimental.

  • Chennai Super Kings - CSK

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Devon Conway

Robin Uthappa

Ambati Rayadu

Ravindra Jadeja(c)

MS Dhoni (wk)

Shivam Dube

R Hangargekar

Dwayne Bravo

Maheesh Theekshana

Adam Milne

The biggest news was MS Dhoni's resignation as captain, and due to a few players' absences, captain Jadeja will have a difficult time leading the team. Deepak Chahar's injury, which prohibited him from playing, and Moeen Ali's delayed arrival due to visa issues disrupted CSK's plan entirely. Ali's presence could have made up for the batting order's lack of a pinch-hitter. Theekshana might be the second spinner in the starting lineup as the squad has to strengthen its new-ball bowling.

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore - RCB

Faf du Plessis (c)

Virat Kohli

Anuj Rawat

Mahipal Lomror

Sherfane Rutherford

Dinesh Karthik (wk)

Wanindu Hasaranga

David Willey

Harshal Patel

Shahbaz Ahmed

Mohammad Siraj

The RCB predicted XI for the first game of the season is seriously weakened by Glenn Maxwell's absence from the first four IPL 2022 matches. Josh Hazlewood will also be missing due to international commitments; David Willey is projected to step in as the lineup's fourth foreign player. It will be intriguing to see whether Virat Kohli bats first or moves up to position three.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders - KKR

Sheldon Jackson

Venkatesh Iyer

Shreyas Iyer (c)

Nitish Rana

Sam Billings (wk)

Andre Russell

Sunil Narine

Shivam Mavi

Tim Southee

Umesh Yadav

Varun Chakravarthy

Tim Southee, who played for the team in the second half of last season, is a viable option for Pat Cummins, who will be out for KKR's first five games. Despite the setback caused by Alex Hales' withdrawal from the IPL owing to bio-bubble depletion, the squad's general makeup is encouraging because of the number of all-rounders.

  • Mumbai Indians - MI

Rohit Sharma (c)

Ishan Kishan (wk)

Anmolpreet Singh

Tilak Varma

Tim David

Kieron Pollard

Sanjay Yadav

Daniel Sams

Tymal Mills

Jasprit Bumrah

Murugan Ashwin

Due to an injury, Suryakumar Yadav will probably miss the first four games for the Mumbai Indians. Even though Fabian Allen is a team member, Tim David is expected to surpass him. Tymal Mills and Jasprit Bumrah have the potential to be an effective bowling team.

  • Punjab Kings - PBKS

Mayank Agarwal (c)

Shikhar Dhawan

Prabhsimran Singh (wk)

Liam Livingstone

Shahrukh Khan

Harpreet Brar

Odean Smith

Benny Howell

Rahul Chahar

Arshdeep Singh

Kagiso Rabada

Punjab Kings have assembled one of the strongest squads in the IPL 2022, replete with a diversified bowling department, despite Jonny Bairstow's tardy arrival. Strong batsmen include Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, Mayank Agarwal, Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, and Livingstone in the bottom of the order. It's a genuine pleasure to watch Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh bowl death overs.

  • Gujarat Titans - GT

Shubhman Gill

Matthew Wade (wk)

David Miller

Vijay Shankar

Hardik Pandya (c)

Gurkeerat Singh Mann

Rahul Tewatia

Rashid Khan

Lockie Ferguson

Mohammad Shami

Sai Kishore

Three top bowlers make up Gujarat's bowling lineup, but their batting raises some questions. Vijay Shankar and Gurkeerat Singh Mann have previously had ups and downs in the IPL, and Shubman Gill's strike rate is not the highest in the league. Hardik Pandya's health continues to be a concern.

  • Lucknow Super Giants - LSG

KL Rahul (c)

Quinton de Kock (wk)

Evin Lewis

Manish Pandey

Manan Vohra

Deepak Hooda

Krunal Pandya

Dushmantha Chameera

Ravi Bishnoi

Avesh Khan

Ankit Rajpoot

Marcus Stoinis and Jason Holder won't be available for Lucknow's first game due to their respective international commitments, which makes the middle order a little more vulnerable. Even though Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan are wise picks, there might be a support issue.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad - SRH

Kane Williamson (c)

Aiden Markram

Rahul Tripathi

Nicholas Pooran (wk)

Abdul Samad

Washington Sundar

Shreyas Gopal

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Marco Jansen

T Natarajan

Umran Malik

The franchise's toughest rival in recent years has been its own management, despite the fact that SRH appears to have a formidable top five. If T Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar can remain healthy, the bowling, particularly the quick bowling, also seems to have potential.

  • Rajasthan Royals - RR

Jos Buttler (wk)

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Devdutt Padikkal

Sanju Samson (c)

Shimron Hetmyer

James Neesham

Riyan Parag

R Ashwin

Prasidh Krishna

Trent Boult

Yuzvendra Chahal

The Rajasthan Royals don't have to worry about absences because they have a nearly full-strength roster available to them. They will be the team to watch out for since they have one of the strongest bowling assaults in the league if players like Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler can perform to the best of their abilities.

Founding Franchises of IPL

Since the IPL started, there are 8 franchises namely, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Punjab XI Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals.

At the end of 2010, the BCCI took the decision to dismiss Rajasthan Royals and Punjab XI Kings were dismissed from the league for breaching the ownership policy, which was later reinstated for the 2011 tournament.

For the 2011 IPL tournament, two new franchises, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joined the league. Before the contract termination by the BCCI, Kochi club could play only for one year. In addition to this, in the year 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad superseded Deccan Chargers in the IPL.

Held over 4 days in 2008, the first tournament was won by the Rajasthan Royals, which was one of the smaller-market franchises under the captaincy of Shane Warne who is a great Australian bowler.

In the wake of the success of IPL and the IPL news, some countries tussled to start domestic cricket leagues in the T20 format. In the IPL 2022 season, the BCCI introduced two new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow SuperGiants that added more value to the game.

Orange and Purple Caps in the IPL

In the IPL seasons, the players get orange and purple caps that represent their performances in the matches. In every format of cricket, bowlers and batters have equal contribution to bring glory to their teams. To reward the performances of the players in cricket, the authorities introduced purple and orange caps in the inaugural season of the IPL.

IPL Orange Cap

Orange cap holder is the highest run-scorer in the IPL matches. The batters with the majority of runs in the IPL tournament are crowned with the orange cap.

Brandon McCullum was the first player who wore the Orange cap but Shaun Marsh came out as the first Orange Cap winner in the IPL.

IPL Purple Cap

A cricketer with the highest-wicket taking record owns the Purple Cap in the IPL league. When a bowler takes the highest-wickets by the end of the IPL tournament gets the Purple Cap.

The cricketer from Pakistani, Sohail Tanvir is the first Purple Cap Winner.
