International Cricket – A Glimpse

The organization that oversees cricket internationally is called the International Cricket Council (ICC). Representatives from England, Australia, and South Africa started it as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909. It was renamed the International Cricket Conference in 1965 and adopted its current name in 1989.

The ICC has 106 members: 60 Affiliate Members, 36 Associate Members, and 10 Full Members compete in sanctioned Test matches. The Cricket World Cup is the most important international competition in cricket, and it is organized and governed by the ICC. Additionally, it selects the umpires and referees for all authorized Test matches, One Day Internationals, and Twenty20 Internationals. It also coordinates action against corruption and match-fixing through its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, which establishes professional standards of conduct for international cricket (ACSU).

The 3 Formats of International Cricket Match

At the international level, cricket is played in Test matches, One-Day Internationals, and Twenty20 Internationals. The International Cricket Council, which also provides match officials, has established the rules and regulations for these matches.

The traditional form of the game, test cricket, has been played since 1877 and is presently standardized in a five-day format with two innings per day. Because it puts teams to the test over a more extended period, it is regarded as the highest form. Teams must demonstrate endurance, technique, and temperament under various circumstances to succeed in this format.

A cash prize of $1 million is given to the team with the highest MRF Tyres ICC Test Match ranking (as of 1 April each year), and cash prizes are also given to the teams in the second through third positions.

One Day Internationals, or ODIs, are a more expensive format that debuted in 1971 but gained traction in the 1980s. These one-inning contests last 50 overs each, and success is anticipated from teams with a good balance of speed, technique, and skill. This format is used for the ICC Cricket World Cup, the premier competition for the organization.

The ICC also hosts the Champions Trophy for the top eight ranked countries, the ICC Women's World Cup every four years, and the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup every two years, all of which have contributed to the development of the 50-over format in more recent years.

The newest, shortest, and quickest variation of the game is Twenty20 Internationals. Since it was introduced in 2005, the 20 overs per side format have attracted new audiences and inspired the development of new technologies. A Twenty20 International match typically lasts three hours and is extremely popular with fans worldwide thanks to its powerful hitting, brilliant bowling, and fantastic fielding.

The ICC World Twenty20 is the top international T20 competition, debuting in 2007. Since then, it has been hosted five more times, with the addition of the ICC Women's World Twenty20 in 2009. The following edition, which will take place in the Caribbean in 2018, will be the first time it stands alone.

Following the accession of Afghanistan and Ireland in June 2017, there are currently 12 ICC Members having Test Match status, which also grants them ODI and T20I status. The top nine nations will compete in a tournament over a two-year cycle as part of the new ICC World Test Championship, which will launch in 2019. Ultimately, the top performer teams will be selected for the ICC World Test Championship final.

There are now 16 ICC Members having ODI status since an additional four nations have ODI status.

Aside from that, all 104 member countries have received T20I status; it became practical for women on 1 July 2018 and will become effective for men on 1 January 2019.

In each of the three cricket formats, these teams are listed on the corresponding MRF Tyres ICC Team Rankings.

What is ICC Player Ranking?

A table called the ICC player rankings lists the accomplishments of international cricket players. The participants are ranked on a scale of 0 to 1000 points using a points-based method that involves several calculations. Players' scores rise when their performance outperforms their prior efforts or records and vice versa. An algorithm determines a player's performance value during a game based on various game-related elements.

Rules and Regulation

The International Cricket Council disregarded rules on bowling reviews, playing conditions, and other ICC requirements. The MCC alone has the authority to amend cricket's laws, but changes are typically made only after consultation with the ICC, the game's international governing body. Teams and players participating in international matches must abide by the ICC's "Code of Conduct." If there are violations of this code, the ICC may impose penalties, mainly fines. The ICC fined players 19 times in 2008.

Tournament & Income Generation

The Cricket World Cup is the main event the ICC organizes that generates and shares most of that revenue among its members. Between 2007 and 2015, the World Cup's sponsorship and television rights generated approximately US$1.6 billion, the ICC's primary source of income. Operating income for the ICC totaled USD 12.66 million during the nine-month accounting period ending on December 31, 2007, primarily from member subscriptions and sponsorship. The 2007 World Cup generated $239 million in event revenue, in contrast to 285.87 million dollars. Additionally, there was an investment income of USD 6.695 million during that time.

The bilateral international cricket matches (Test matches, One Day Internationals, and Twenty20 Internationals), which make up the vast majority of the international playing schedule, are owned and managed by the ICC's members and do not generate any revenue for the organization. It has tried to develop other new events to increase World Cup revenue. These events include the 2005 ICC Super Series and the ICC Champions Trophy, both of which were held in Australia. However, the ICC had anticipated tremendous success from these expansions.

The Champions Trophy 2004 event was described as a "turkey of a tournament" and a "fiasco" in Wisden 2005; however, the 2006 edition was seen as a tremendous success due to a new format. The Super Series was widely viewed as a failure and is not expected to be repeated, and India called for the Champions Trophy to be scrapped in 2006.

Initially played in 2007, the ICC World Twenty20 was a success. According to the ICC's current plan, an international competition will be held annually, with the Twenty20 World Cup taking place in years with an odd number of days, the World Cup continuing to be held the year before the Olympic Games, and the ICC Champions Trophy taking place in the remaining year of the cycle. The Twenty20 World Cup will be held in 2010 for the second straight year as this cycle starts that year.

Members

The ICC has three classes of membership: Affiliate Members, which are the 60 governing bodies in nations where the ICC recognizes that cricket is played under the Laws of Cricket, and Full Members, which are the ten governing bodies of teams that compete in official Test matches. Associate Members are the 34 governing bodies in nations where cricket is well-established and organized but does not qualify for Full Membership.
