Irani Cup 2023

The Mastercard Irani Trophy, often known as the Irani Trophy or Irani Cup, is a first-class cricket competition run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Ranji Trophy winners and a cricket team from the rest of India compete yearly. Players from various state-based Ranji teams are on the cricket squad for the rest of India.

The competition was created during the 1959–60 season to commemorate 25 years of the Ranji Trophy championship. It was given the name Zal R. Irani in honor of the late BCCI president, who was involved with the organization from 1928 until his passing in 1970.

History - Irani Trophy Cricket Match News

The inaugural match between the Ranji Trophy winners and the Rest of India occurred in 1959–1960. The trophy was named in honor of Zal Irani, a devoted cricket fan and longtime treasurer and president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It was played around the end of the season for the first several years. Recognizing the significance of the fixture, the BCCI moved it to the beginning of the season, where it was traditionally held to mark the commencement of the new domestic season from 1965–1966 to 2012–2013.

It was changed in 2013 to a time immediately following the Ranji Trophy final, which resulted in two Irani Cup games in the 2012–13 season. Since then, the match has continued to be played after the season, immediately after the Ranji Trophy final.

For the first time in the tournaments history, the BCCI opted to hold the 2019–20 and 2022–23 trophies back-to-back in 2022, with the matches being held in Rajkot and Indore, respectively.

The Return of the Irani Cup

For the first time in more than three years, the Irani Cup will be played, with the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy winner, Saurashtra, slated to host the Rest of India in Rajkot from October 1–5.

In March 2020, Saurashtra defeated Bengal in the Ranji final thanks to their first-inning lead. The Irani Cup match that the winners were scheduled to play was postponed a week later owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In India, the virus is still spreading. Hence the 2020–21 domestic cricket season did not feature red-ball matches. Madhya Pradesh won the Ranji Trophy after defeating Mumbai by six wickets in the final in June of the 2021–22 cricket season.

The BCCI has now provided Saurashtra with an opportunity to compare itself to the top first-class players in the nation. When MP, the current Ranji champions, can compete in the Irani Cup has yet to be discovered.

The Saurashtra Cricket Association released a statement saying, "It is extremely encouraging that Domestic Season 2022–23 of BCCI are to be played in full swing and Irani Cup is to be played after two long years." Irani Cup used to be played between the winner of the preceding Ranji Trophy and the rest of India. Mr. Jaydev Shah, President of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, strongly advocated.

"Saurashtra Cricket Association deeply appreciates Shri Jaybhai Shah, Hon. Secretary, BCCI, and everyone at BCCI for graciously considering Saurashtra Cricket Associations proposal to host and play the prestigious Irani Cup 2022."

The most recent Irani Cup competition occurred in Nagpur in February 2019, with Vidarbha defeating the rest of India thanks to an early lead.
