A political controversy erupted after Congress national spokesperson Dr.Shama Mohamed criticized Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma on social media, calling him “fat” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.” Her now-deleted posts on X (formerly Twitter) came after India’s 44-run victory over New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Despite the win, Mohamed targeted Sharma’s fitness and leadership, sparking widespread backlash.
In one post, Mohamed wrote, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Needs to lose weight!” She also compared him unfavorably to former Indian captains, calling him a “mediocre player” who got lucky to lead the team. The remarks were met with sharp criticism from cricket fans and political opponents alike, with BJP leaders accusing her of disrespecting a cricketing icon.
The Congress party quickly distanced itself from Mohamed’s comments. Party leader PawanKhera stated that her remarks did not reflect the party’s position and confirmed she was asked to delete the posts. He emphasized that the Congress holds sporting icons in high regard and advised Mohamed to exercise greater caution in the future.
Defending her comments, Mohamed claimed they were “generic” observations about a sportsperson’s fitness and not intended as body-shaming. However, BJP leaders seized the opportunity to criticize both her and the Congress party, highlighting their history of undermining athletes.
