The NZ20, the proposed new franchise-based T20 tournament in New Zealand, is set to be backed as their preferred domestic T20 competition, New Zealand Cricket stated in a release on Monday. The preliminary approval by the New Zealand Cricket board allows NZC to work towards the development of several aspects of the league, from licensing to commercial.

As per the release, the move would revitalise New Zealand's domestic T20 structure, and replace the Super Smash, which began in the men's format in 2005/06, and women's format in 2007/08. It will mean a deviation from the current local association-based competition to a franchise-based format, similar to those operating around the world.

According to Diana Puketapu-Lyndon, the NZC board chair, a choice was also made between having a standalone NZ20 competition, or integration into the Australian Big Bash system.

"There was extensive discussion on the merits of these proposals, but the Board concluded that now's the right time to revitalise our 21-year-old Super Smash competition," she said.

"This followed broad consultation, particularly within our cricket network, and careful consideration of a wide range of information and advice, including the Deloitte Report. The next steps include working with NZ20 to agree terms and seeking support from our members."

Among the focus points will be the support for women's cricket and the regional representation of cricketers.

"In particular, we want to work with NZ20 to ensure it incorporates and supports the women's domestic T20 competition, and that it maintains a level of prominence and visibility consistent with NZC's strategic commitment to the women's game," she said.

"Ensuring regional representation of NZ20 teams so fans and aspiring young cricketers can see their heroes in action is also very important to the Board, as is the question of ownership and control, including equity in the competition".

Dion Nash resigns as NZC Board director

A few hours after the announcement of the T20 league, New Zealand Cricket announced the resignation of New Zealand Cricket Board director Dion Nash. Elected to the Board in 2024, Nash said he could no longer align with the future direction of the organisation and his position within that.

"Ultimately, I reached a point where I felt it was the right time to step aside", he said.

Diana Puketapu-Lyndon expressed her appreciation of Nash's term on the Board. "We thank Dion for his dedicated service and valuable contributions," said Puketapu-Lyndon. "We wish him well in his future endeavours."
