The much anticipated Women's Bangladesh Premier League is all set to be shifted to July, a top BCB official confirmed to Cricbuzz on Wednesday (March 11). Initially, the BCB had announced that the inaugural edition will be played between April 3-15.
However, a lack of interest from sponsors and the failure to secure a third franchise forced the BCB to postpone the tournament. The event was supposed to be Bangladesh's first franchise-based T20 competition for women. Many cricketers in the country had long dreamed of this tournament, as they believe it would be an important step in the professional growth of women's cricket.
"We are planning to host the tournament in July rather than from April," the official confirmed. The BCB earlier stated that the inaugural edition will feature three teams, bringing together leading national cricketers alongside emerging talents. Local players will be selected through a player draft system to ensure competitive balance, squad strength, and depth across all teams.
Franchises will also be allowed to sign overseas professional players. Rubaba Dowla, BCB Director and Chairperson of the BCB Women's Wing, has been appointed Chairperson of the WBPL Governing Council.
