The Indian cricket team revitalized its quest for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final by securing a commanding 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth’s Optus Stadium. With this win, India reclaimed the top spot in the WTC points table, now holding 61.11 percentage points, while Australia dropped to second with 57.69 points.
After suffering a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand earlier this month, India needed to win the five-match series in Australia by at least 4-0 to maintain their chances for the WTC final. Following their triumph in Perth, India now requires three wins and a draw in the remaining four matches to secure a spot in the final without relying on other teams’ results.
Conversely, Australia must win three of their next four matches to claim the series and qualify for their second consecutive WTC final. The two teams will next face off in a Day-Night Test at Adelaide from December 6-10, followed by matches in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. With Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa also in contention, the upcoming fixtures promise to be crucial for all teams involved.
