Vijay Hazare Trophy is all set to get more star power in the New Year. Internationals Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul will join their respective state teams for the domestic 50-over competition even as the national team will be preparing for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand next month.
Cricbuzz can confirm that these players have informed their state associations about their availability for the VHT to honour their mandatory domestic commitments.
Gill, the Test and ODI skipper, is expected to play the January 3 and 6 games for Punjab, who take on Sikkim and Goa on those days in Jaipur. Punjab, clubbed with powerhouse Mumbai in Group C, are in fourth place with two wins from three games. He will have to leave the state side soon to join the Indian team, which is expected to assemble in Baroda on January 7-8 for the first ODI against New Zealand (January 11).
Jadeja, it is learnt, has communicated to the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) that he will play the January 6 and 8 matches against Services and Gujarat. The Saurashtra team are currently playing their league games in Alur, Karnataka. They have one win from three matches and are placed sixth in the eight-team group, which also includes Rishabh Pant's Delhi side.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) could not immediately confirm which games Rahul will play, but it is learnt from sources that there is a likelihood of him turning up for the January 3 and 6 matches, against Tripura and Rajasthan in Ahmedabad. Karnataka are second in Group A with a 100 per cent win record in three games.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has confirmed that Yashasvi Jaiswal has reached Jaipur and is expected to play Mumbai's game against Goa on Wednesday (December 31). Jaiswal was indisposed briefly and had to miss the first three games, and the left-handed opener may show up for the Goa game. Mumbai are on top of Group C with three wins.
From Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli to Pant, most internationals - with the exception of Jasprit Bumrah - have turned up for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) to fulfill their domestic duties, a participation the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made mandatory. Bumrah is an exceptional case as the BCCI is avoiding too much workload on the country's spearhead.
Kohli, who has played two games, will return for the January 6 match for Delhi, which is being captained by Pant. The keeper-batter has committed to playing all the VHT games for Delhi.
