A significant news emerged for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and MS Dhoni fans regarding the potential retention of Dhoni as an uncapped player in the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering reinstating a rule that allows Indian players who have retired from international cricket for at least five years to be classified as uncapped. This rule, previously in effect until 2021, could enable CSK to retain Dhoni at a reduced cost.
CSK CEO KasiViswanathan clarified that while the franchise had not formally requested this retention, discussions about the “uncapped player rule” were indeed taking place. If reinstated, this would allow CSK to keep Dhoni without significantly impacting their salary cap, as retaining an uncapped player would typically cost around ?4 crore compared to higher amounts for capped players.
