Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel faced a setback during his team’s thrilling 12-run loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) at the ArunJaitley Stadium on Sunday. Apart from witnessing their winning streak being broken, DC suffered another blow as Axar was fined ?12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during the match. The penalty was imposed under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences. As this was DC’s first offence of the season, Axar avoided harsher penalties.
Despite having three spinners in their lineup, DC failed to complete their overs within the allotted time, leading to the fine. The IPL media release confirmed the penalty, stating, “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22, Patel was fined ?12 lakh.”
In the match, MI posted a challenging total of 205/5, powered by Tilak Varma’s gritty 59 and contributions from Ryan Rickelton (41),Suryakumar Yadav (40, and NamanDhir (38 not out). DC came close in their chase, with Karun Nair’s brilliant 89 off 40 balls keeping them in contention. However, MI’s bowlers, led by Karn Sharma’s three-wicket haul, turned the tide and secured victory with an over to spare.
