In a significant move ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have appointed AjinkyaRahane as their new captain. All-rounder VenkateshIyer will serve as his deputy. This decision comes after KKR’s successful captain from the previous season, ShreyasIyer, moved to Punjab Kings in the IPL mega auction.
Rahane, who was bought by KKR at his base price of ?1.5 crore, brings extensive leadership experience and a recent resurgence in form. He played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, topping the batting charts with 469 runs at an average of 58.62 and a strike rate of 164.56.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed confidence in Rahane’s leadership abilities, stating, “We are delighted to have someone like AjinkyaRahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader.” Rahane himself is honored to lead KKR, acknowledging the team’s balanced squad and looking forward to defending their title. KKR will begin their title defense against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens on March 22.
