Jasprit Bumrah, who led India to its only Test victory in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is emerging as the front-runner to succeed Rohit Sharma as the Test captain. However, his long-term prospects for the role are uncertain due to ongoing fitness issues, particularly back spasms that have raised doubts about his participation in next month’s Champions Trophy.
Despite his undeniable talent and pivotal role in India’s pace attack, concerns linger regarding Bumrah’s ability to handle the captaincy responsibilities over an extended period. With Rohit Sharma’s tenure as Test captain appearing to be nearing its end, selectors are contemplating whether Bumrah can be relied upon as a permanent skipper.
In light of these considerations, the selectors are also focusing on appointing a stable vice-captain. Rishabh Pant and YashasviJaiswal are in contention for this role, with Pant being viewed as the more likely candidate. During a recent BCCI review meeting, Bumrah’s lower back injury was a significant topic of discussion as the team prepares for a five-match Test series against England in July.
While there is hope that Bumrah will recover in time to lead the team in the first Test at Headingley, his fitness remains a critical concern for both his captaincy aspirations and India’s future leadership strategy.
