In December 2022 and January 2023, the South African national cricket team traveled to Australia to play three Test matches. The 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship is one of the test match formats.
The fixtures for the tour which included a three-match ODI series to be played immediately following the test series were confirmed by Australia in May 2022. South Africa, however, pulled out of the ODI series in July 2022 since the matches conflicted with the start of their new domestic T20 league. The ODI series would have been a part of the first ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, which will run from 2020 to 2023. Australia was awarded the three Super League points, subject to ICC clearance. The games were eventually abandoned, and Australia was awarded the points.
Due to an injury, Glenton Stuurman was forced to withdraw from South Africa’s Test team on November 22, 2022. Lizaad Williams took his place. After the first test, Josh Hazlewood took Micheal Neser’s place in the Australian team. Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc were replaced as injury replacements after the second test by Ashton Agar and Matt Renshaw. Theunis de Bruyn of South Africa was disqualified from the third test because he had to return home for the birth of his first child.
