For the three-match ODI series against India in August, the selectors of Sri Lanka have appointed Charith Asalanka as the new ODI captain, replacing KusalMendis. Ahead of the ongoing series against India, Asalanka had been named T20I captain after WaninduHasaranga had resigned from the role following Sri Lanka’s early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.
In December last year, the same set of selectors appointed Mendis as the ODI captain, though he had also led Sri Lanka in several matches in last year’s World Cup in an acting capacity.
Though Mendis has been in good touch with the bat, and under his leadership, Sri Lanka won six of the eight completed ODIs, the selectors opted to go in a different direction. Under Mendis’ captaincy, Sri Lanka had won five consecutive home matches against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe but lost 2-1 away to Bangladesh.
In Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7, Sri Lanka are going to play three ODI matches against India. After going 2-0 down before the final match in Pallekele on Tuesday, they lost the ongoing T20I series.
