Despite losing the series-concluding game, Mehidy Hasan Miraz said on Sunday that Bangladesh's maiden ODI series win over Australia was a "special" one.

Bangladesh had won only three ODIs against Australia in the 25 matches they had played before this series, while the hosts had to wait 21 years for their second win over Australia, which came through an 86-run victory in the opening game of the just-concluded three-match series.

Bangladesh created history by securing their maiden ODI series win over Australia after beating them by five wickets via the DLS method in the second game.

Bangladesh gave their all in the third ODI, but Australia held their nerve to cross the line and end the series with a one-wicket win.

"Obviously, this is incredibly special because we had never won a series against Australia before," Mehidy, who missed the game as a precaution after being hit on the head in the second ODI, told reporters on Sunday.

"We won a single match back in 2005 (in Cardiff) and I was very young then and remember watching it on TV. Winning an entire series against them today is a massive milestone for Bangladesh. But the biggest achievement of all is hearing the Australian players actively praise our cricket and our team," he said.

"Overall, I am very satisfied. These are exactly the things that feel good as a captain. Playing well against a team like Australia is a huge opportunity. The fact that they are praising us, talking positively about our cricket, our bowlers and our batsmen, and that we earned their respect by giving them a tough time is a clear sign of our improvement. If we can continue like this, we will evolve into a very strong team," he said.

Mehidy praised Shoriful for taking the game deep after the team management decided to rest Nahid Rana and give him an opportunity.

"As for Shoriful, he obviously bowled exceptionally well. A match like this is very difficult for a player who is in and out of the side, yet he performed," said Mehidy.

"He bowled well in the last series and did the same today. I think our entire bowling unit has a real hunger. Whenever someone gets an opportunity, they try to make a comeback and contribute to the team. This is a very positive sign, and having such a bowling unit provides a great opportunity to win matches. You saw Rana bowl well early on. Shoriful wasn't getting chances, but he proved himself by showing he can take wickets in crucial situations," he said.

"This competition exists in every position and I think this internal competition is excellent for the team. Having the hunger to perform is crucial for consistency, and every player in the squad has that hunger right now," he said.

Miraz said he is fine at the moment but added that during the second ODI he did not listen to the team physician and opted to continue despite being hit on the head.

"Alhamdulillah, I am feeling much better now. Regarding the heat of the moment, the physio, the doctor, everyone wanted me to leave the field. However, my only thought was that if I left, the momentum could shift the other way. So, keeping the team in mind, I played through that momentum, even though it was a risk.

"The doctor told me at the end that he wanted me to come off, and when I went to the hospital, he mentioned it was quite risky and that I shouldn't have played, as nothing is bigger than life. But I didn't think about all that; my only focus was that we needed 24 runs to win, and if I went back, it might jeopardise the game," Miraz said regarding the second ODI that helped Bangladesh script history.
