The Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fever is spreading internationally and it appears to be prompting broadcasters to reevaluate their strategy. His inclusion in the India A squad has sparked significant interest, with the authorities deciding to televise the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka involving India, Afghanistan and the hosts.
The India A side is led by Tilak Varma, but it is the presence of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (15), who lit up the recently concluded IPL with a staggering 776 runs in the Orange Cap race, that has elevated the profile of the tri-series and got the authorities thinking.
The tri-series, scheduled to be held from June 9 to 21, will be telecast on Sony Sports and Sony LIV. As the official broadcast partner of Sri Lanka Cricket,Sony Sports Network holds the rights to cricket played in Sri Lanka, and its officials have confirmed that the tournament will be broadcast live with full-scale coverage.
Sony was missing out on cricket action of late, as the World Cup and IPL were on the rival Jio Hotstar channel, and it decided to make best of the Sooryavanshi fever prevailing across the cricket world. They, of course, hold the rights of the India-Sri Lanka bilateral series which, as reported by Cricbuzz on May 18, will be played in the second half of August. In between there is Lanka Premier League (LPL), which, it is understood, will be on Jio Hotstar.
In a social media post, Sony network announced, "The Sooryavanshi Express is coming to light up the stage in a high-octane Tri-series." It will be a one-day tri-series, to be played in Dambulla.
Meanwhile, there is still no clarity on the three T20Is that are expected to be added to the two-Test series. However, those familiar with the discussions in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and SLC believe the chances of the three-match T20I series being approved are bright. As of now, there is however, no confirmation.
Recently, the BCCI announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad will take the place of vice-captain Riyan Parag, who is recovering from an injury.
