Former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has openly criticized India’s head coach GautamGambhir for his performance during the pre-series press conference ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Manjrekar stated that Gambhir “doesn’t have the right words nor demeanour” for media engagements and suggested he should focus on his behind-the-scenes role instead.
During the press conference, Gambhir candidly addressed India’s recent struggles, particularly the 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand, admitting, “We were completely outplayed.” He acknowledged that India “deserves the criticism” for its lackluster performances. Despite facing social media backlash, Gambhir remained unfazed, asserting that online criticism does not affect him. “What difference does social media make in my life? I knew this role would be challenging,” he stated.
Following Gambhir’s remarks, Manjrekar took to social media to express his disapproval, questioning Gambhir’s effectiveness in communicating with the press. He suggested it might be wise for the BCCI to keep Gambhir away from media duties, advocating for players like Rohit Sharma and AjitAgarkar to handle such responsibilities instead. Manjrekar’s comments reflect a broader sentiment that Gambhir’s direct style may not be well-suited for media interactions, which often require a more diplomatic approach.
