Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq are reportedly set to return to Pakistan's white-ball squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa after being left out of the central contracts list. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had announced the contracts last week, omitting both players, a move that surprised many. While Fakhar's exclusion was attributed to fitness issues, no official reason was given for leaving Imam out. However, following Pakistan’s loss in the first ODI against Australia, the team appears to have reconsidered their decision and is looking to bring back the experienced duo for the South Africa series in December.
According to Cricket Pakistan, both Fakhar and Imam are expected to be included in the squad. Fakhar Zaman has been under scrutiny ever since he publicly expressed his disagreement with the decision to drop Babar Azam during the PAK vs ENG series. His exclusion from the central contracts, despite his impressive numbers in ODIs, raised eyebrows. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, during a press conference before the Australia series, admitted that Fakhar's tweet was a factor but also pointed to fitness concerns and a pending show-cause notice.
As for Imam-ul-Haq, he has not featured in any ODI matches since the 2023 World Cup. His return will strengthen Pakistan's top order ahead of the crucial South Africa series.
