Fleming to continue at CSK despite clamour for removal

While there has been speculation around Chennai Super Kings' coaching setup following a disappointing season, the franchise is not expected to make any changes at the top. Cricbuzz understands that Stephen Fleming, who has overseen one of the most successful eras in IPL history, will continue as head coach.

The former New Zealand captain, who has been associated with CSK since their inaugural season in 2008 and has served as head coach since 2009, retains the confidence of the franchise despite recent calls from some quarters for a change in direction.

There has been some clamour for change among sections of the CSK fanbase in the wake of the team's recent struggles, with even "Sack Fleming" campaigns surfacing on social media. However, the franchise is not expected to alter its course, with Fleming set to remain in charge and continue as head coach, at least for the next season.

The team has not exactly fared well over the last two years, finishing 10th in 2025 and eighth in the just-concluded season. Yet, the CSK management is set to continue with Fleming, who has been associated with the franchise since the beginning of the IPL. Fleming's contract is renewed annually, and Cricbuzz understands that it will be extended once again this year, as has been the case in the past.

The New Zealander is currently in the United States overseeing Chennai Super Kings' American subsidiary, Texas Super Kings, in Major League Cricket (MLC). He is the head coach there too.

The franchise will conduct a review of its season, during which several key decisions are expected to be taken. But a debate on Fleming's contract will not be one of them. Within the franchise, it is viewed as a foregone conclusion. The exercise of review will take place only after the conclusion of the ongoing MLC season.

The obvious implication of the development is that the views of MS Dhoni continue to carry enormous weight within the franchise. Not that there was ever a situation to the contrary and the latest is another reaffirmation of the enduring influence of Dhoni on the CSK affairs. It is no secret that Dhoni shares a close professional relationship with Fleming, an association that has only strengthened with each passing season.

Meanwhile, the franchise has received a few trade enquiries, but an approach for Hardik Pandya is not among them. There was some speculation on Monday that CSK and Delhi Capitals could explore a swap involving Khaleel Ahmed and David Miller, but both franchises have categorically denied the possibility.

For now, the CSK position is that it will not spare any player for trade. Then again, that was also the franchise's stance before the Ravindra Jadeja deal materialised last season. As things stand, no such move is on the cards, but the trade situations in the IPL have a way of evolving themselves.
