Women’s Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka W Beat Bangladesh W By 3 Runs

The Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Team won an incredible win in the 18th Match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 against Bangladesh Women. When play resumed after the lengthy rain delay, the odds were heavily stacked against them. Bangladesh needed just around run-a-ball in the seven-over chase, but so often in this tournament, the pitches have made such chases tricky. Bangladesh started well, showing good intent despite losing early wickets, and Sri Lanka won the game.

Bangladesh Women have won the toss and invited Sri Lanka to bat first. The first inning started with Madavi and Athapaththu at the crease, and Salma Khatun opened the attack. Athapaththu was gone in the second over and only scored 1(5). Jahanara Alam took her wicket and bowled out her with a fullish inswinger.

Madavi was in form, hit boundaries, and took Sri Lanka to 22 runs during the powerplay. Madavi and Sanjeewani tried settling down with the crease but lost their wickets in the 8th and 9th over, respectively. Shanjida Akter, in the last ball of her second over, took the wicket of Madavi 18(31), while Rumana Ahmed 8(13) dismissed Sanjeewani with her first ball of her first over.

Sri Lanka was at 50 with the efforts of Prera and Nilakshi de Silva. Then, Fahima came to throw her 2nd over and took the wicket of Hasini Prera in the 5th ball. Sobhana Mostary caught out Hasini in the 15th over after scoring 11(17). Kavisha Dilhari came to the crease in place of Hasini Prera but could not stand for a long time and lost her wicket in the 18th over. Rumana Ahmed took her wicket and was gone after scoring 11(10).

Rain stopped the play with 11 balls left to complete the innings. There was a drizzle early on, but the rain was heavier on this occasion. After the rain stopped, the revised playing conditions were announced, and Sri Lanka’s inning was done after 18 overs. It was decided that the second inning was a 7-over chase, and Bangladesh’s target was 41.

The second inning started with Fargana Hoque and Murshida Khatun at the crease, and Sugandika Kumari opened the attack. Bangladesh lost an early wicket to Murshida with excellent glovework by Sanjeewani. This was a massive wicket for the Lankans because Khatun was in top form. Fargana was also gone in 3rd over. Again an outstanding stumped out by Sanjeewani. Ranaweera threw an ultra-low bounce, and this sneaked well under Hoque’s heaving blade. Fargana lost her wicket after scoring 6(8).

Sri Lanka was not letting the boundaries go, and they sneaked in the odd dot ball with their tight fielding. After the wicket of Fargana, Rumana Ahmed tried to control the game, but Ranaweera removed her in the 6th over. Ranaweera then came into attacking form and took 5 back-to-back wickets, and Sri Lanka got a great victory. Brilliant composure from the Lankans, and they got a morale-boosting win against Bangladesh.
