The Latest Updates from International and Domestic Cricket

Cricket is a game played with a bat and ball on a field between two teams consisting of eleven players each. The sport has been around for more than 300 years and has more than 2.5 billion fans worldwide.

The latest format that is going on in cricket is T20 World Cup. In this article, let’s talk about all the matches Zimbabwe has played against other teams. Zimbabwe’s national men’s cricket team is also known as the Chevron. Zimbabwe has been a member of the ICC since 1992.

A T20 World Cup format match was scheduled on 19th October 2022 between Zimbabwe and West Indies. West Indies kept their hopes of taking the cup to their home alive as they beat Zimbabwe by 31 runs with ten balls to spare. Though the margin speaks of a comfortable win, it was filled with equal parts anxiety.

It was not an up-to-the-mark performance from the two-time champion, West Indies. In the first innings, the team seemed to have lost its form and when they went from 90 runs with two wickets down to 101 with six wickets down, and eventually 153 with seven down. At this point, this showcases their intelligence and experience on the field to get back on track.

The head coach criticized the team for its “unprofessional” batting effort.

Johnson Charles, a replacement for the ill Brandon King, was responsible for the turn of events as he had 45 runs, of which two were sixes in West Indie’s innings.

Both sides made solitary efforts and enforced changes after the Zimbabwe captain, Craig Ervine, suffered a mild asthma attack. The stand-in captain, Tony Munyong, looked rueful at the end of the match.

Rovman Powell, struggling with guilt at the non-striker’s end, made amends after a seventh-wicket stand of 47 with Akeal Hosein. Murzabani blessed him with two sixes out of the first three balls he delivered, the second of which went 104 meters away – the second longest of the tournament so far – and took West Indies to a score of 150.

Another live cricket score international match was organized between Zimbabwe and Ireland. Both of them belong to Group B. The match was scheduled for 17th October 2022. The team re-announced itself on the big stage with a win over Ireland in their first major tournament appearance since 2016.

This was Zimbabwe’s first world cup win over Ireland in their four meetings across the 50 and 20 over formats.

In chilly conditions, on a pitch with bounce, Zimbabwe was in trouble at the start for 39 runs with three wickets in the powerplay. But they were quick to recover when the score went to 79 runs with four wickets down at the halfway stage. Sikandar Raza, the Zimbabwean batter, took the reins in his hand when he powered his way to his sixth T20I half-century while sharing a 58-run fifth-wicket stand with Milton Shumba.

Raza added 33 runs from 17 balls with his partner Luke Jongwe at the death to give the bowlers a decent total to defend. Raza took on the Ireland spinners, as Simi Singh and Gareth Delaney conceded 52 runs in five overs that they bowled. However, these fast-paced bowlers weren’t spared by Zimbabwe either, as Curtis Campher and Mark Adair’s seven overs cost 68 runs, with the only left-arm bowler, Josh Little posing as a real threat.

George Dockrell and Campher tried to put up some resistance by scoring a 42-run fifth-wicket partnership, but once they were separated, that too by Raza, Zimbabwe’s path to victory was clear. Though Zimbabwe became carefree and untidy at the end by dropping two catches, their bowlers were pleased with their returns.

Seven wickets fell to the quicks and two to the spinners. Sean Williams became the player with the longest T20I career of 15 years and 323 days, finishing with 1 for 22.

Ireland’s bowlers had a plan which was to bowl short early on, and they were almost spot-on with their strategy. In the first five overs, they only delivered one full delivery, testing Zimbabwe’s top 4 players for their pace, bounce, and seam movement.

A ball kissed Regis Chakabva’s shoulder, sending him to his room.

The ball caught the shoulder of his bat on its way through to Lorcan Tucker. Wesley Madhevere faced the same kind of situation in the opening over and to-edged this delivery with a four. The Zimbabwean player would have been out in the next over when he pulled Mark Adair to Campher at the deep square, but Campher mistimed his jump, and the ball went straight through his hands.

Williams and Raza pulled up their socks and accelerated Zimbabwe’s innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 42, dominated by Raza. Williams had joined the party with a slog sweep off Simi that went over the short-square boundary for six. But his intention to repeat it could not be fulfilled as the Ireland pair was well aware of the trick.

This year is probably the best year for Raza. Since July 2022, he has scored five T20I fifties in nine innings, compared with one fifty in 47 innings before that. Against Ireland, Raza did not only ensure a single-handed win but also got a solid total.

He did all this with complete authority and awareness about how the Irelands were dead set on bouncing Zimbabwe out, but the team got it all wrong.

Wrapping Up

The ICC could not have planned the format better. In this article, we saw a live cricket score international match in Zimbabwe competing against the West Indies and Ireland. The team may not have won against the West Indies, but it played the game with utmost dedication and hardship.
