Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: BCCI to allow ‘Impact Player’ as a Substituition Summary –

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and other domestic Twenty20 tournaments now use the “Impact
Player” concept introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Making the
format more appealing, dynamic, and intriguing “not only for the fans but also participating
teams from a strategic aspect” is the plan, which will go into force this season.
According to the latest cricket news, the new idea allows each team to substitute one player
from its starting lineup during a T20 match. According to the BCCI, it was inspired by the
substitution regulations in other sports, like basketball, football, and rugby.
The BCCI note said, “The concept is to allow one substitute player per team to take a more
active part in a match. This would add a new tactical/strategic dimension to the game. A number
of team sports allow teams to make tactical substitutes i.e. football, rugby, basketball, baseball.
The substitute is allowed to perform or participate like any other regular player,”
Impact Player Rules
● Four replacement players must be named at the toss in addition to the playing XI. Any
one of the designated subs may be used as an Impact Player.
● Per match, each club is only authorized to use one Impact Player. The teams can decide
whether to use the Impact Player.
● The Impact Player may be used anytime before the end of the 14th over of either inning
in a game.
● Before the finish of the current over, the captain, head coach, or team manager must
alert the fourth or on-field umpire of the introduction of the impact player.
● The Impact Player’s replacement is ineligible to play for the rest of the game.
Additionally, that player will not be allowed to return as a replacement fielder.
● The playing rules under Rule 24.1 – Substitute Fielders will apply if a player sustains an
injury while fielding during an over. The impact player may change the wounded player
in the middle of the contest, but they are unable to continue playing. In every other case,
the Impact Player can only be employed after completion of the Over.
● If an injury happens while the Impact Player is being deployed, the same rules enabling
substitutions will be in effect.
● If a fielder is injured, the bowling team may insert the impact player after an over or in
the middle of one.
● A team cannot use an Impact Player to replace a bowler who has been suspended for
breaking the law.
● Impact Players cannot be employed in a game where both innings have been cut to
fewer than overs per side.
