As a cricket match ritual, the captains of both the teams came up for the toss on the grounds of Simonds Stadium, Geelong where Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first.

The pitch was a little more grassy, making the pitch easier for the batters to hit square of the wicket and favor the game on their side.

Nissanka and Kusal Mendis opened the hitting attack with Fred Klaassen on the crease for bowling. With slow pace, the duo scored just 5 runs after 2 overs. Mendis released some pressure for the team, hitting the ball outside off for the first boundary of the innings.

Sri Lanka set a total run score of 162-6 after 20 overs.

To begin the run chase of 163, Max ODowd and Vikramjit Singh came to the crease to witness the bowling of Dhananjaya. Starting the match like Sri Lanka, NED scored 14 runs after 2 overs. On the next over, Max ODowd smashed a maximum swing of the bat for the first boundary of the second innings.

The side lost their first wicket of Vikramjit Singh on a delivery from M Theekshana. Bas de Leede gave a breakthrough to the side, banging a six for Netherlands. Bringing 14 runs for the team in 10 balls, Bas de Leede was caught out on a throw from Kumara and the team stood at a score of 40-2 after 6 overs.

Finishing the successful 8 overs, NED crossed the half-century with a score of 54-3 after 8 overs.  The powerful efforts of Max ODowd and Scott Edwards on the pitch, the team scored 82-4 after 13 overs. Wonderful innings of 15 overs helped the team to cross the century, standing at a score of 102-5.
