New Zealand vs Sri Lanka: NZ Outclassed SL by Massive 198 Runs Margin in 1st ODI

After winning the test series 2-0, New Zealand and Sri Lanka squared off in the 1st ODI at Eden Park Auckland. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first. In their innings, NZ did well with the bat. Except for Tom Latham, all New Zealand batters received starts, but none of them were able to progress. Only Finn Allen managed to gain a half-ton. The Sri Lankan spinners deserve praise for consistently picking off wickets whenever New Zealand appeared to pose a threat. The middle-overs bowling of Chamika Karunaratne was effective, preventing the hosts from building on their strong start. In his first ODI, Rachin Ravindra performed brilliantly but fell one run short of a fifty. Although Hasaranga and Madushanka were costly, the other SL bowlers performed well to hold the Kiwis to a total of 274. It was supposed to be a chaseable score.

In the run chase, to secure a convincing victory, New Zealand totally destroyed Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s innings stalled out while attempting to reach a par-total. The Sri Lankan batters made some poor shot choices, which enabled Shipley and Henry bowl superbly with the new ball. By 10 overs, they were 31-5, and from that point on, there was no turning back. The only top-order batsman to reach double figures was Angelo Mathews, and Sri Lanka continued to falter until they were eventually bowled out for a pitiful 76. Shipley was the best bowler for New Zealand, claiming 5-31 in 7 overs and recording his first ODI century.

If Sri Lanka is brutally honest while reviewing this game, they will realise that several of the dismissals are entirely their fault. A few batters lost their balance while attempting to attack wide pitches, and others did so by attempting to handle the short ball when it wasn’t necessary. This is a demoralising loss for Sri Lanka; their ambitions of securing direct qualifying to the World Cup later this year depend on the outcome of this series; if they are to maintain those hopes, they must improve rapidly. That is all we have for you today. We hope you will join us for the next second ODI.
