New Zealand and Sri Lanka faced each other in the second test of the series. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Tom Latham and Devon Conway came to bat first in the first innings and Kasun Rajitha opened the bowling attack. New Zealand got a great start as both the openers gave a great start and made the partnership of 87 runs. Kasun Rajitha sent Tom Latham to the pavilion and Latham scored 21 runs before getting out. Devon Conway scored a half-century and got out after scoring 78(108). After the second wicket, Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls made a partnership and made a partnership of 363 runs for the third wicket. Kane Williamson scored a double hundred and got out after scoring 215(296). Henry Nicholls also scored an unbeaten double-hundred. New Zealand declared the innings at 580-4. Kasun Rajitha took 2 wickets, and Prabath Jayasuriya and Dhananjaya de Silva shared one wicket each.

Sri Lankan openers Oshada Fernando and Dimuth Karunaratne came to bat and Tim Southee opened the bowling attack. Sri Lanka lost the wicket very early as Oshada Fernando returned to the pavilion after scoring 6(32) and Kusal Mendis got out for a duck. Dimuth Karunaratne played an inning of 89(188) and Chandimal scored 37 runs and he was the second-highest-scorer. Sri Lanka got all out at 164 runs and New Zealand took a lead of 416 runs. M Bracewell and Matt Henry took three wickets while Southee, D Bracewell, and Tickner shared one wicket each.

New Zealand gave a follow-on to Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan opener came to open. Once again, Sri Lanka lost their opener very early but Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis made a partnership of 71 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne scored a half-century and got out after scoring 51(83). Kusal Mendis scored a half-century and got out after scoring 50(106). Dinesh Chandimal also scored a half-century and got out after scoring 62(92). Dhananjaya de Silva got out after scoring 98(185) and missed his century by 2 runs. Sri Lanka got out at 358 runs and lost the match by innings and 58 runs.
