New Zealand and England faced each other in the 2nd test at Basin Reserve, Wellington. New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first.  

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett came to bat, and Tim Southee opened the bowling attack. In the 4th over, Crawley got out after scoring 2(12) on the 4th ball, and Ollie Pope hit four on the last ball, and it was the boundary of the match. In the 6th over, Ollie Pope hit four and got out on the next ball after scoring 10(6). Duckett got out after scoring 9(21). England didn’t get the start and lost three wickets in under 10 overs.

Harry Brook came to bat after three wickets and continued his aggressive approach along with Joe Root. In the 10th over, Harry Brook hit back-to-back three fours. England reached 50 runs with the boundary in the 12th over.

Harry Brook made a partnership with Joe Root after the initial blow and made his half-century in 52 balls. Brook reached his half-century with four, and England reached 100 runs. England scored 101-3 in 26 overs in the first session.

Harry Brook hit back-to-back two sixes in the 35th over on Daryl Mitchell. England reached 150 runs in the 39th over. In the 45th over, Root took a single and reached his fifty. Harry Brook hit four on the fourth ball and scored his hundred. It was his 4th test ton in his fifth test match. England reached 200 runs in the 48th over. In the 53rd over, Harry Brook hit back-to-back two boundaries. England was at 237-3 in 53 overs at the end of the second session.

In the 56th over, Harry Brook hit back-to-back two fours and brought his 150 runs in the test, and England reached 250 runs. In the 58th over, Harry Brook smashed six on the fourth and broke his highest run record in tests. Harry Brook never looked back and continued hitting boundaries. He smashed at least one boundary in each over. In the 63rd over, Root smashed back-to-back two fours and reached into the 90s. In the 65th over, Root started the over with four, took a double on the last ball, and reached his century.

England was in trouble after the initial blow, but Joe Root and Harry Brook made sure England won’t lose any wickets without reducing the net run rate. Both the pair made a partnership of 294 for the 4th wicket until the rain came and stopped the match.

After the rain, the match could not resume, and umpires called the stumps due to low light. England scored 315-3 in 65 overs at the end of day 1. Harry Brook and Joe Root were playing at the score of 184(169) and 101(182), respectively.
