The 2nd ODI of the SA tour of India was played on October 9, 2022 at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi. The day seemed favouring the guest as SA won the toss and chose to bat first. De Kock and Janneman Malan took the field for the first pitch of the game, and Siraj launched the onslaught. De Kock smashed a stunning four on the first ball of the first over. De Kock was nevertheless bowled out in 2.1 overs by Siraj. De Kock bowled earlier following a score of 5. (8). It was India’s crucial wicket.
India bowled tight, limiting South Africa to only 19 runs after 5 overs with the loss of 1 wicket. Despite playing well and hitting some gorgeous boundaries, Janneman Malan was unable to resist Shahbaz Ahmed’s flat, good-length delivery. Shahbaz Ahmed’s first ODI wicket came on this play. After scoring, Janneman Malan was dismissed at 23 (31).
With the stable partnership between Markram and Hendricks, SA tried to comeback in the game. Markram scored 79 runs in 89 balls and was dismissed by Washington Sundar while Hendricks was sent to pavilion by Mohd. Siraj at a score of 74 of 76 balls.
Later on, Klaasen (30 runs of 26 balls) and Miller (35 runs of 34 balls) helped SA to put a score of 278-7 in 50 overs. In the death overs, Siraj and Shardul Thakur were outstanding. They prevented David Miller from escaping and leading South Africa to a score of 300.
In response to this, Indian openers, Shikhar Dhawan (13 runs of 20 balls) and Shubman Gill (28 runs of 26 balls) departed early. Iyer and Kishan looked steady today compared to their previous inning. Iyer and Kishan kept changing the strike while punishing the loose deliveries from the SA bowlers.
Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer each scored fifty runs, and their partnership amassed 150 runs, giving India the victory. To succeed in the game, SA required a significant effort from Kagiso Rabada and company but this didn’t happen today. Ishan’s innings ended at 93; he was just 7 runs short of his century. Kishan was knocked out after a heroic effort, and Samson joined Iyer. Iyer reached his second ODI century, and both batsmen are steadily getting closer to the goal.
To end the square off on a positive note, Iyer hit a classy square-drive on the fifth ball of the 46th over. India won the game by 7 wickets. Series is now level at 1-1. Let’s see who will win the series on October 11, 2022.
