The match began with SA winning the toss, but that was the only good thing that happened to them today. India was invited to bat first, and the Indian openers got things going with a lot of vigor, especially KL, who was in that zone where no bowler could stop him. A 96-run opening stand between KL Rahul (57) and Rohit Sharma (43) laid the groundwork for the team.
Rohit also showed terrific form during his time at the crease but was dismissed by Maharaj. It was a much-needed breakthrough for South Africa. Rohit dragged the delivery off outside and couldn’t time his slog sweep well, giving his wicket to Maharaj.
Kohli and KL then kept the scoreboard going with boundaries and singles, keeping the run rate above 9. In the 11th over, KL got a cleanest lofty shot, making the ball land in the stand and completing his 20th half-century with a six. However, he could manage to sustain his wicket, and in the next over, he premeditated the slog sweep, missed his line, and was given LBW.
Kohli also enjoyed himself and had there not been confusion between the two, SKY might have provided us with even more amusement before getting run out. He yet performed well enough to amuse the audience and hurt the bowlers. The Proteas bowlers had no response to the assault, and they’d all like to forget the evening. SKY swatted 61 runs in just 22 deliveries. He smashed five boundaries and as many sixes en route to his 102-run partnership off just 40 balls with Virat Kohli (49 not out).
SKY-like launching into action immediately, as we saw in the most recent game’s challenging bowling conditions. Today, he destroyed the South African attack with poor bowling, a solid foundation, and a better batting surface.
To end things on a high note, Dinesh Karthik delivered some lusty punches in his seven-ball 17-not-out knock against SA.
South Africa had a mountain of runs to climb but couldn’t do much as Arshdeep Singh dismissed the South African captain, Bavuma, on the second ball of his first over and Rossouw on the fourth one, giving a breakthrough to his team. Rossouw now had two successive ducks in his records against India. Markram and de Kock tried to hold the strings together for the guest and kept the scoreboard moving. After the PP, SA was on 45-2. However, Rohit was eager to break this emerging partnership and brought Axar into the attack in the 7th over.
Axar Patel also had his laugh in his very first over of the match as he dismissed the dangerous South African batter, Markram (33 of 19 balls). For the next 5 overs, Indian spinners restrained the run rate of the guest below the asking rate and squeezed their momentum.
Following Markram’s dismissal, Miller and de Kock tried their shots to keep the SA’s hope alive in the match, and both went on to score half-centuries. India needed to break this partnership to ensure a sweet victory and none could do the job for India. Miller went on to score a century off just 46 balls. SA scored 221 runs in 20 overs losing just 3 wickets.
Even though the current batting circumstances aren’t quite as favorable as what India created, South Africa had a long way to go. Today, it’s officially a day to honor non-violence in India, the Men in Blue didn’t have any of it. Today’s inning has been as rough as they could get. In the tough square off the two finest T20I sides, it’s India that tasted victory with 16 runs. It’s the very first time India won any T20I series against SA at home.
