The International Cricket Council (ICC) is conducting the T20 Women’s World Cup qualifier 2022. The qualifier rounds got underway from September 18, 2022 and Abu Dhabi is the hosting venue for the upcoming matches. In these matches, eight teams are participating that are battling against each other to secure their spot for the women’s World Cup in 2023.
Zayed Stadium and Tolerance Oval are the two venues for the scheduled upcoming matches.
The eight participating teams participating in the qualifier round have reached the penultimate stage through different routes. The teams who finished bottom in the last edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 have reserved two spots for the upcoming matches for Women’s World Cup in 2023.
In the respective groups, Bangladesh and Thailand were the teams who occupied two spots out of eight.
The rest of the teams, Zimbabwe, Scotland, United States of America, and United Arab Emirates would qualify by winning their respective regional qualifiers after battling on ground. Due to Covid-19, the East Asia Pacific region qualifier was canceled. Thus, Papua New Guinea qualified as the highest ranked team from that region on the ground.
Ireland is the highest-ranked team from the qualifiers who hadn’t won their regional tournament.
Format of Women Qualifier T20 World Cup
For the qualifier rounds, the eight participating teams are split into two groups, four teams in each and each team will square off against each other in their group once in a round-robin format.
From each group, the top two teams will go through the semi-finals with the winners of each semi-final progressing to the final and T20 Women’s World Cup 2023.
According to the latest cricket news, Bangladesh and Ireland have secured their spots for the T20 Women’s World Cup 2023 which is scheduled to be held in South Africa.
In the semi-finals round of the qualifiers in Abu Dhabi, Bangladesh defeated Thailand while Ireland got the lead beating Zimbabwe. The two teams will come against each other on September 25, 2022.
Bangladesh scored 113 for 5 and Thailand stood at 102 for 6; Ireland had 137 for 6 and Zimbabwe at 133 for 6.
