ICC Men’s WT20 Cup 2022: Sluggish Performance from UAE’s Batters Helped Netherlands Won by 3 Wickets

The second match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 qualifier Group A was played between UAE and Netherlands on October 16, 2022 at Simonds Stadium, Geelong. UAE won the toss and opted to bat first but nothing happened well as they planned before the beginning of the match.

UAE lost it’s first wicket as Chirag Suri at a score of 33 in 6.3 overs. They needed a momentum and a partnership to make the game for the UAE but couldn’t get any. Kashif Daud was dismissed by Pringle at a meagre score of 18 (21) at 10.3 overs. Till the end of 17th over, UAE couldn’t even cross the 100 mark on the scoreboard in the match. Netherlands was good with the ball today and Bas de Leede dismissed 3 of the UAE’s batters to restrain the momentum in the match.

The UAE’s innings never got going, and they ended with 111 runs scored in 20 overs at a loss of 8 wickets. The Netherlands restricted them to just six total boundaries thanks to some outstanding stints from Klaasen, Pringle, and de Leede. Waseem scored the most runs, 41, but he needed 47 deliveries to get those runs, and he wasn’t the only one who needed a lot of deliveries. Although the ball isn’t coming on the pitch particularly well, you have to believe that Netherlands has this covered.

The batters had it tough. Although Netherlands didn’t get as many wickets as they would have liked during the powerplay, they did a good job of keeping UAE in check. It is a little bit two-paced; we saw Pringle make a turn there early on, and he set us up well. The seamers simply hit long, hard balls, which made it impossible for the batters to get on base. They were unable to escape from Netherlands even while they were in partnerships.

In the run chase, a lot of good shots and boundaries were expected from Netherlands’ batters but we could see much from them. Netherlands also showcased the sloppy performance. Vikramjit Singh was clean bowled at a low score of 10 of 7 balls by Basil Hameed.

UAE fought well to stop Netherlands from getting to the target easily. Muhammad Waseem’s 41 runs of 47 deliveries came crucial for Netherlands to surpass the target within 20 overs.

111 was never going to be enough, but UAE made sure that things weren’t easy for the Netherlands. ODowd got out to a fast start, but an impressive Junaid Siddique forced him back within the powerplay. The turning point came in the 14th over when Siddique picked up Cooper and van der Merwe; he should have also got Pringle but for Rizwan’s lost catch, the spinners tightened the screws and built the pressure, which led to wickets at regular intervals. After that respite, which was worth 27, the Netherlands could rebuild. Edwards then maintained his composure and saw them through.

Netherlands won by 3 wickets in the 2nd Match of Group A WT20 Cup qualifiers.
