One of India’s most significant recent match-winners is Pant. Though he first gained notoriety for his performances in the T20 format for the Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) in the Indian Premier League, his Test record has received much praise.
He has 2,123 runs at an average of 43.32 in 31 Tests. In this format, his personal best score is 159*. In the format, Pant has five centuries and ten fifty scores.
Pant has 840 runs in 27 games throughout 27 ODIs at an average of 36.52. His personal best mark is 125*. In the format, Pant has one century and five half-centuries.
Pant has also played in 54 T20I games, where he has amassed 883 runs at a 23.86 average. He has three half-centuries in the format, and his best score is 65*. He is the team captain for Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
Rishabh Pant’s Profile
At 19, Rishabh Pant has experienced every peak and low in his cricket career. Pant, a young player from Delhi, got recognition after his performance for India Under-19 at the 2016 World Cup. He opened the competition with a blistering 24-ball 75 against Nepal, the fastest half-century of the competition, and then finished it off with a century against Namibia. He is a dashing left-handed wicket-keeper batsman. India lost the championship match but gained some advantages, the biggest of which was the rise of the Pant.
Days after his stunning catch against Nepal, Pant was selected by the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL auctions, demonstrating that his bravery wasn’t overlooked. By the end of the season, he had even been appointed as their captain, albeit for the one-day format of the game, having earned a permanent spot in Delhi’s local circuit. In the interim, he played in a Twenty20 international in Bengaluru against England and made his full India debut.
Rishabh’s second Ranji season wasn’t as successful as his first. But the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy made up for it. Against Himachal Pradesh, he scored the second-fastest T-20 century in history in just 32 balls. Due to this knock, he was named to the Nidhas Trophy team, which put him back in the selectors’ consideration.
Pant’s performance in his comeback match was unimpressive once again. At the international level, he hasn’t been himself and has frequently tried to hit the ball too hard to his taste while failing to demonstrate his hitting prowess. He has an oddly low strike rate for a power hitter—just over 100 in the International T20—which is far below average.
Even though Pant is far from being a finished product, he possesses all the necessary skills to succeed on the international stage. And it is for this reason that Delhi Daredevils, where he will play under Ricky Ponting and Gautam Gambhir, has retained him.
IPL through the years
Rishabh Pant’s skill set and the understanding that the IPL need are very complementary. Rishabh Pant would check the most of the boxes on any list of qualities for the perfect T20 batsman. He is a fierce cricket ball hitter with a broad variety of shots and has an absurdly easy time clearing the boundary ropes. You name it, and this guy has it in his arsenal—the scoops, the paddles, the flicks.
He has exemplified the Indian Premier League’s concept of “where talent meets opportunity” throughout his entire career. In the 2016 auction, Delhi Daredevils paid a staggering 1.9 Crores to get Rishabh. Although his first season didn’t go as well as Rishabh had hoped, in 2017, he more than lived up to the owners’ faith. Rishabh Pant had finally arrived after a breakout season. His self-assurance was at an all-time high going into the IPL’s second season, and there were rumours that he might soon be given an India cap for the 2017 Champions Trophy. But the young batsman’s life took a different turn. His father passed suddenly a few days before his team’s opening game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, leaving a challenging vacuum to fill.
After the incident, he returned to cricket and almost single-handedly led his team to victory. He then smashed a dazzling 97 against the Gujarat Lions to conclude the tournament with 366 runs.
For the third season, Rishabh was kept, and he turned out to be Delhi’s lone bright spot in an otherwise depressing campaign. Pant destroyed the bowlers’ morale during the entire season. His 125-run innings against the SRH were legendary, and his masterful dismantling of top-tier Bhuvneshwar was evidence of his greatness as a T20 batter. He has a tonne of international experience and will produce a tonne of work for Delhi Capitals this year.
