England vs Iran FIFA World Cup 2022: The Three Lions beat Iran 6-2 in the opening match

England debuted in the 2022 Qatar World Cup with a 6-2 triumph over Iran in the first Group B encounter. Bukayo Saka scored twice for the Three Lions, while Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford scored once. Iran’s Mehdi Taremi scored both goals.

In the first half, Luke Shaw sent in a cross that was headed beyond substitute goalkeeper Hossein Hosseini by Jude Bellingham.

Bukayo Saka then increased England’s lead with a fierce shot from inside the D, and Raheem Sterling converted on the volley of a cross from Harry Kane to make it 3-0 as England went into the half with a three-goal lead.

Saka then went on to complete his brace, extending England’s lead, but Mehdi Taremi assisted Iran in opening their account shortly after. Marcus Rashford scored England’s fifth goal after coming on as a substitute, and Jack Grealish made it 6-1 with an easy tap-in. Iran was then given a late penalty, which Taremi converted successfully.

However, England took the lead with goals from Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Raheem Sterling, as Iran suffered an early setback when their first-choice goalkeeper was stretchered off after colliding with an England forward. Saka completed his brace in the second half. At the same time, Manchester United youngsters Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish made immediate contributions after coming off the bench, putting the final two nails in Iran’s coffin.
