Sri Lanka and Afghanistan came against each other in the  1st ODI of the series at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota. Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka came to bat and Fazalhaq Farooqi opened the bowling attack. In the 1st over, Karunaratne hit a four on the fifth ball and it was the first boundary of the match. In the 3rd over, Karunaratne got out after scoring 4(6) on the second ball. In the 8th over, Nissanka hit back-to-back two fours. In the 9th over,  Kusal Mendis got out after scoring 11(17) on the second ball. After 10 overs, SL was at 44-2.

In the 11th over, SL reached 50 runs on the last ball. In the 15th over, Mathews got out after scoring 12(21) on the fourth ball. In the 20th over, Nissanka got out after scoring 38(59) on the second ball. In the 21th over, Asalanka hit a four on the second ball and Dhananjaya hit a four on the fourth ball. In the 23rd over, Asalanka hit a four and SL reached 100 runs. After 30 overs, SL was at 137-4.

In the 33rd over, SL reached 50 runs. In the 36th over, Asalanka hit back-to-back two fours and scored a half-century. In the 37th over, Dhananjaya took a single and scored a half-century. In the 38th over, Dhananjaya got out after scoring 51(59) on the first ball. In the 41th over, SL reached 200 runs. In the 43rd over, Shanaka hit a four on the fourth ball and got out after scoring 17(16) on the next ball. In the 46th over, Hemantha hit a four on the second ball and Asalanka hit a four on the fifth ball. In the 48th over, Asalanka hit a four and SL reached 250 runs. In the 49th over, Hemantha hit a six on the second ball and got out after scoring 22(20) on the fourth ball. In the 50th over, Asalanka ran out after scoring 91(95) on the first ball, Rajitha got out for a duck on the next ball, and Pathirana ran out after scoring 1(2) on the last ball.

In 50 overs, Sri Lanka got all out at 268 runs.

Chasing 269 runs, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran came to bat and Kasun Rajitha opened the bowling attack. In the 1st over, Gurbaz hit a four on the third ball. In the 6th over, Gurbaz got out after scoring 14(23) on the second ball and Rahmat started his inning with a four on the next ball. In the 7th over, Ibrahim Zadran hit back-to-back two fours. In the 11th over, Ibrahim Zadran started the over with a four and hit one more four on the fourth ball and Afghanistan reached 50 runs. In the 12th over,  Ibrahim Zadran smashed two sixes. In the 13th over,  Ibrahim Zadran hit two fours and Afghanistan reached 50 runs.After 15 overs, AFG was at 91-1.

In the 17th over,  Ibrahim Zadran smashed back-to-back two fours and Afghanistan reached 100 runs. In the 22rd over, Rahmat Shah took a single on the fourth ball and the partnership between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah reached 100 runs. In the 23rd over, Ibrahim Zadran hit a four on the third ball and Rahmat Shah survived a run out. In the 26th over, Afghanistan reached 150 runs. In the 30th over, Ibrahim Zadran got out on the last ball after scoring 98(98) and missed his well deserved century. After 30 overs, AFG was at 171-2.

In the 36th over, Rahmat Shah took a single on the first ball and scored a half-century and Shahidi hit a four on the second ball and Afghanistan reached 200 runs. Rahmat finished the over with a four. In the 37th over, Rahmat got out after scoring 55(80) on the last ball. In the 40th over, Shahidi hit a four on the second ball and Nabi hit a four on the fifth ball. After 40 overs, AFG was at 229-3.

In the 42rd over, Shahidi hit a four on the third ball. In the 43rd over, Nabi started the over  with a four. In the 45th over, Afghanistan reached 250 runs. In the 46th over, Shahidi got out after scoring 38(47) on the first ball and Nabi finished the over with a four. Afghanistan scored 269/4 and won the match by 6 wickets.
