A HISTORIC MOVE BY THE BCCI TO IMPLEMENT SAME PAY POLICY IN CRICKET

There is great news aired around by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The authorities have stepped towards bringing equality in women’s cricket as well as they are implementing the same pay policy in both men’s and women’s cricket tournaments. 

On Thursday, October 27, the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah came up on twitter to give a good news saying, ‘I’m pleased to announce as the BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket’ as per the latest cricket news. 

He further added, ‘‘The @BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind.’

With the announcement of the BCCI decision, the users and the players from the cricket world went on to flooding twitter with their opinions. 

‘Well Done! Doesn’t matter whether they generate the same revenue as Men’s cricket. Getting women pay parity is a move in the right direction!. This will encourage women’s cricketers also.’

The legendary women cricketer, Mithali Raj said, It’s a historic move. It’s a new dawn for women’s cricket. It’s a new dawn for women’s cricket. Things were already moving ahead. WIPL together with pay equity policy are steps to get women’s cricket to where men’s cricket is today.

As a member of the women’s cricket fraternity I thank the BCCI and honorary secretary Jay Shah for this announcement. We are already witnessing the growth and popularity of women’s cricket from 2017 till now. It’s a great move in the right direction.’ 

The former veteran cricketer, Harbhajan Singh also appreciated the BCCI’s decision to bring equality in the fee of women players. As he tweeted, ‘the BCCI has a set standard for other sports bodies. It will encourage greater participation of women in the game. A historic milestone indeed.’ 

Lately, in the recent matches, the Indian women’s team got a victory over Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the Asia Cup on the soil of Bangladesh. The squad also bagged their first-ever silver medal in the cricket at the Commonwealth games in the beginning of this year. Recently, in the Annual General Meeting of BCCI, the cricket declared the hosting of the women IPL season which is scheduled to be hosted next year.
